B.C. wood will be famous

Yesterday, VANOC revealed some details about the podiums where world's athletes will mount, in order to receive their medals: it will be made of wood from communities across B.C.

Each of the podiums is made of more than 200 slabs of wood, arranged vertically like the grill of a truck.

From above, the podium is supposed to resemble Vancouver Island.

The pieces were donated from 23 community forests, First Nations and businesses across the province — yellow cedar from Campbell River, birch from Clearwater, spruce from Merritt.

“In giving their wood to VANOC, they’re saying, ‘We’re part of these Games,’” said Premier Gordon Campbell. “‘We’re showing the world who we are as British Columbians.’”

There will not be queues for Olympic SkyTrain, TransLink says

TransLink has backed off on initial warnings that passengers would have to wait up to two hours for a SkyTrain during the Olympic Games, saying new modelling suggests most queues will be closer to an hour.

Seems like new modelling, based on travel patterns and schedules as well as the timing and size of "load-outs" — the number of people leaving a Games venue at one time — suggest passengers shouldn't face the same situation like during the opening of the new Canada Line last fall.

Clara Hughes will be Canada's flag-bearer for Olympics opening ceremony

Speculation continued throughout the week that the 37-year-old Winnipeg native will be named Friday to carry the Maple Leaf into BC Place Stadium on Feb. 12 as Canada welcomes the world. According to CBC, Ingrid Paul, who is Hughes's coach, confirmed the speculation earlier Friday.

The official announcement is slated for 5:30 p.m. ET in Richmond, B.C., site of the Olympic Oval.

"The only other chance I had to attend one was in Australia, in Sydney, in 2000. An amazing, amazing experience," Hughes said earlier this week. "But, you know, all I could think walking into that stadium that day was 'This is really cool but how wild would it be to be marching in at a Canadian Olympics, engulfed by sea of red and white.'
