Even if Vancouver city officials have been opposed to hosting MMA events, Gerry Gionco managed to finally receive a business licence to hold an amateur MMA and kick-boxing card on Friday, Nov. 27, at the Fraserview Hall, a 1,000-seat venue in east Vancouver. MMA is a fighting style that combines boxing, wrestling and kick-boxing.
Vancouver Coun. Suzanne Anton said licensing pro events is different than licensing amateur ones.
"The professional one is a separate issue," said Anton, who supports holding bigger events in Vancouver.
"I'm of the view that it has been done in Montreal, it's well enough run, it's enough of a benefit to the city and it's so popular that I think we should be going ahead with it."
