Mixed martial arts in Vancouver

By Ines Raluca Prodan @ 11-24-2009

Even if Vancouver city officials have been opposed to hosting MMA events, Gerry Gionco managed to finally receive a business licence to hold an amateur MMA and kick-boxing card on Friday, Nov. 27, at the Fraserview Hall, a 1,000-seat venue in east Vancouver. MMA is a fighting style that combines boxing, wrestling and kick-boxing.

Vancouver Coun. Suzanne Anton said licensing pro events is different than licensing amateur ones.

"The professional one is a separate issue," said Anton, who supports holding bigger events in Vancouver.

"I'm of the view that it has been done in Montreal, it's well enough run, it's enough of a benefit to the city and it's so popular that I think we should be going ahead with it."

Vancouver International Airport is ready for Olympic exodus

By Ines Raluca Prodan @ 11-18-2009

There are a lot of chances that Vancouver International Airport will have the busiest day on Marcs 1st, 2010. According to some estimations, 39,000 passengers and 77,000 pieces of luggage depart after the Olympic closing ceremonies.

But the airport authority is ready to roll, after years of planning and at least $30 million in new snow removal and de-icing equipment.

"We have our work cut out for us," YVR head of 2010 planning Paul Levy said yesterday.

To deal with the record volume, the plan is to set up a remote terminal at Sea Island to process athletes and games officials. Most of them will have checked in for their flights already at the athlete villages in Vancouver and Whistler.

Hotels will stagger their check-out times to avoid clogging departures that morning. And at the airport, customized luggage carts can carry thousands of oversized athletes' bags.

Saint Cecilia's Day Concert

By Ines Raluca Prodan @ 11-18-2009

Thursday November 19, 12 PM @Alice MacKay Room, Lower Level, Central Library

First of all, you have to be aware about two things: the first one is that Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of the arts; the second one, late November is a traditional time for all artists and musicians to give thanks for their gifts, and for the support of their patrons.

With this in mind, Vancouver Public Library invites you to a free afternoon concert in the annual celebration of St. Cecilia's Day, and in honour of late patron and Vancouver Public Library supporter, Luciano Vascotto.

The concert will be hosted by Vancouver impresario and pianist Karen Lee-Morlang and will feature some of Vancouver's top young professional classical musicians, including: Erin Marks, oboe; Yuel Yawney, violin; Katy Hedalen, soprano and D.J. Calhoun, baritone.
